The fall from grace was quick for AKM Nahidul Islam, a former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, who was arrested by detectives from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the capital’s Eskaton area on Saturday.

According to Detective Branch (DB) Chief and Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) had issued a warrant for Nahidul Islam’s arrest.

Acting on a tip-off, a DB team detained him and later handed him over to the tribunal authorities.

Once enjoying power like a star in the police force, Nahid was promoted to DIG on July 11 2023 from Additional DIG of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

During his tenure as Superintendent of Police in Meherpur, Nahid reportedly opened fire on a procession organised by BNP-Jamaat supporters, a video footage of the incident has recently resurfaced on social media.
