More than 40 hours after voting ended in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (Jucsu) and hall union elections, the results are yet to be announced.

Chief Election Commissioner Prof Moniruzzaman said the results will be declared at 7pm on Saturday.

Earlier in the morning, Proctor and Jucsu Election Commissioner Prof Dr AKM Rashidul Alam had said the results would be announced by 2:30pm.

“Jucsu polls were held after 33 years, and we lack adequate experience in this regard. However, overall cooperation has been satisfactory. We hope there will be no further delay, and results will be declared by 2:30pm,” he told reporters earlier in the day.

The long-awaited 10th Jucsu election, along with polls to 21 residential hall unions, was held on Thursday.

Voting began at 9am and continued until 5pm. However, citing irregularities, lack of transparency and bias, BNP’s student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) announced boycott of the election around 3:30pm on Thursday.

At the same time, one faction of Bangladesh Students’ Union under the banner of “Shompritir Oikya” expressed no-confidence in the commission. Several other panel candidates also alleged vote rigging and mismanagement.

Many students, however, termed these complaints as politically motivated and cast their votes until the end of polling.

Vote counting started at 10:10pm on Thursday and was interrupted twice on Friday.

A total of 11,747 voters were enlisted in this year’s polls, while 178 candidates contested different posts.
