Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Sunday issued a special weather alert forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in six divisions, including Dhaka, over the next 72 hours due to a low over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the alert, different areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

The Met Office warned of possible landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram and waterlogging in parts of Dhaka and Chattogram cities due to excessive rainfall.

Currently, the monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderately strong over the North Bay. Under its influence, most places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions are likely to witness light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds in the next 24 hours.

Moderate to very heavy rainfall is also likely in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet, the Met Office said.

It defines rainfall between 23–43 millimeters in 24 hours as moderately heavy, 44–88 millimeters as heavy, and above 88 millimeters as very heavy.

Day and night temperatures across the country may fall by 1–2 degrees Celsius during the spell.

On Sunday, the country’s highest temperature was recorded in Ishwardi, Pabna, at 35.5 degrees Celsius, while the lowest was in Sylhet at 24.2 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, 126 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in Chattogram, 87 mm in Rangamati, 80 mm in Sandwip, and 69 mm in Tetulia.
