Jahangirnagar University’s long-dormant student union sprang back to life on Saturday as the results of the Central Student Union (JUCSU) election were announced after two days of tense delays and high-stakes political drama.

Independent candidate Abdur Rashid secured the Vice President post, while Mazhar Ahmed, backed by Chhatra Shibir, emerged as General Secretary.

The Shibir-supported ‘Coordinated Student Alliance’ strengthened its hold on the campus politics, winning 20 of the 25 central council seats, including the top three positions, amid both celebrations and debate across the university.

Chief Returning Officer Professor Dr Moniruzzaman declared the results at the JUCSU Election Commission office in the evening, concluding an election that ended a 33-year hiatus since the last vote in 1992, which was halted after a turbulent incident at the Senate building.

Literature & Publication Secretary: Zahidul Islam Bappi (Chhatra Shibir)

Cultural Secretary: Muhibullah Sheikh (Independent)

Co-Cultural Secretary: Raihan Uddin (Chhatra Shibir)

Drama Secretary: Ruhul Islam (Chhatra Shibir)

Sports Secretary: Mahmudul Hasan Kiran (Independent)

Co-Sports Secretary (Male): Mohadi Hasan (Chhatra Shibir)

Co-Sports Secretary (Female): Farhana Akter Lubna (Chhatra Shibir)

The 2025 JUCSU election marks the tenth poll in the university’s history and the first in more than three decades, signalling a new chapter in campus student politics.
