Education Adviser Professor Dr. C R Abrar on Tuesday assured a delegation from the Bangladesh English Medium School Assistance Foundation (BEMSAF) that measures would be taken to address difficulties faced by English-medium students in pursuing higher education due to the absence of school-based certificates.

The delegation informed the adviser that English-medium students currently register for Edexcel and Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) examinations through the British Council, either individually or via schools.

However, the lack of school-based certification creates obstacles during higher education admission. Many students resort to using names of non-existent institutions, which could pose problems for pursuing education abroad.

In response, the delegation demanded that registrations for Edexcel and CAIE be carried out using the Educational Institution Identification Number (EIIN) of approved schools, with the approval of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB).

They also proposed the introduction of a pre-registration process from Grade 9.

The delegation further raised concerns about coaching centers operating during school hours, which distract students from institutional education, discipline, and future goals, urging that these centers remain closed during school time. They also requested a reduction in the high registration fees for Edexcel and CAIE examinations to make them more affordable for students and parents.

Responding to the concerns, Adviser Dr. Abrar said, “English-medium students are an important part of our national education system. It is crucial to ensure their registration, certification, and progress in higher education in an organized and transparent manner. Effective measures will be taken in coordination with approved institutions and the national curriculum.”

The delegation also assured support for establishing English Speaking Clubs in schools, madrasas, and technical institutions under the national curriculum, highlighting that these clubs would enhance students’ English proficiency and contribute to building a skilled future workforce.
