Results of the long-awaited Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election are expected to be announced between 8pm and 10pm on Friday.

The announcement came from Election Commission member secretary Prof AKM Rashidul Alam.

Vote counting began on Thursday night after the daylong election, which was marred by allegations of ballot stuffing and administrative bias. Voting started at 9am and was scheduled to end at 5pm, but some centers continued beyond the deadline.

As of Friday afternoon, counting was still underway. A total of 11,743 students were eligible to vote in the polls, with turnout reaching around 67–68 percent, according to EC officials.

Eight full and partial panels contested the election, though several later boycotted, including the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Sampritir Oikya, Swatantra Angikar Parishad, Songshoptak Parishad, and candidates of the Socialist Student Front. Some independent candidates also pulled out.

Panels that remained in the fray included the Jamaat-backed Islami Chhatra Shibir-supported “Combined Students’ Alliance,” the “Student Unity Forum” backed by Ganatantrik Chhatra Sansad, and the independent “Students’ Sammilon” led by former Anti-Discrimination Student Movement coordinator Abdur Rashid Jitu.

This year, 177 candidates contested 25 central posts. Nine candidates vied for vice president (VP), while eight competed for general secretary (GS).

In the women’s 10 residential halls, 59 of 150 posts had no candidates, while 67 were uncontested. As a result, elections were held for only 24 posts. In two of the university’s 21 halls, all candidates were elected unopposed.
