The central office of the Jatiya Party (JP) in the capital’s Kakrail was attacked and set on fire Friday evening, the second such assault on the party headquarters in just over a week.
Witnesses said chaos broke out around 7:15 p.m. when protesters stormed the building, smashing property and starting a fire inside. The violence erupted shortly after a rally at Shahbagh, where Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders condemned an attack on their president, Nurul Haque Nur, and renewed their call for the resignation of the home affairs adviser.
Following the rally, participants returned to the party’s Paltan office. Soon after, the JP office in Kakrail came under attack.
Police rushed to the scene, using water cannons and sound grenades to disperse the mob while firefighters battled the flames. The Fire Service said they received an emergency call around 7:30 p.m. through the national helpline 999 and managed to bring the fire under control.
JP presidium member Rezaul Karim blamed the groups involved in the Shahbagh rally, though he did not name them directly. He also accused the government of failing to protect political parties from repeated attacks.
“Jatiya Party was here in Bangladesh, and it will remain in the future,” Karim told reporters outside the charred office.
On Aug. 30, the same headquarters was targeted in a similar incident of vandalism and arson, raising fresh questions about political unrest and security lapses in Dhaka.
