Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has urged the international community to act urgently to resolve the Rohingya crisis and stop the unfolding humanitarian tragedy in Gaza, warning that history will not forgive inaction.

The Rohingya crisis is not a bilateral issue with Myanmar. Bangladesh has been realizing its part of obligation as a responsible neighbour and a committed member of the international community, Yunus said in his speech at the 80th UNGA session in New York on Friday.

He said the humanitarian situation in the camps is reaching breaking point due to funding shortages.

Without urgent new funding, monthly ration may have to be halved to a paltry US$ 6 per person, pushing the Rohingya deeper into hunger and accentuating their malnutrition,” Yunus warned.

He called on donors to step forward with enhanced contributions and urged the international community to apply pressure on Myanmar and other actors in Rakhine to reverse discriminatory policies and secure sustainable repatriation with rights and dignity.

Turning to the Middle East, Yunus delivered one of his strongest appeals yet on Gaza, saying: “Children are dying of hunger. Civilians are being killed without distinction. Entire neighborhoods, including hospitals and schools, are being wiped from the map. We are witnessing a genocide happening live.

He warned that global silence and inaction would not be forgiven by history.

On behalf of the people of Bangladesh and conscientious citizens across the world, I once again make a strong appeal: the two-state solution must be implemented now, through the establishment of an independent State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he said.

Yunus reaffirmed Bangladesh’s belief in a culture of peace rooted in tolerance, nonviolence and cooperation, noting the country’s long-standing contributions to UN peacekeeping.

Even today, nearly 6,000 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are serving in some of the world’s most volatile regions under the UN flag, and 168 of our peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, he said.
