National Citizen Party’s (NCP) chief coordinator for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, has said his party will only contest the election with the ‘Shapla’ (water lily) symbol and warned that if it is not allotted, their movement will shift to the streets.

He made the remarks at a press conference on Thursday night following a coordination meeting of the party held at the Hobiganj municipal town hall.

Sarjis Alam alleged that despite NCP’s application for the symbol through a valid process, the Election Commission (EC) has yet to provide any legal or logical explanation as to why it will not be allotted.

He claimed the EC is being influenced by individuals or groups.

He further said political harassment through filing of cases continues in the country, and if the persecution of innocent people does not stop, the NCP will launch protests.

Referring to the upcoming election, Sarjis said: “Those who participated in the 2024 and 2018 elections, enjoyed benefits, legitimized the Awami League government, or supported the fascist structure have no right to contest in the next polls."

Regarding the Awami League and Jatiya Party, I want to make it clear that they must go through judicial procedures, Sajis concluded.
