As Bangladesh gears up for its next national elections, the spotlight is on journalists and the crucial role they play in shaping public perception.

Speaking at a discussion session on Sunday at the DFPI conference hall in Dhaka, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Mahfuz Alam called on media professionals to remain vigilant, aware and responsible before, during, and after the elections.

“Election periods are pivotal moments for democracy. If journalists uphold their responsibility, public distrust towards the media can be reduced significantly,” he said.

The adviser emphasised the importance of ensuring an unrestricted flow of information during the elections.

“The public must know what is happening on the election field, the types of corruption, and any instances of violence,” he said.

Reflecting on past experiences, he added, “Previously, there were restrictions on media coverage during elections. This time, there will be no such barriers.”

Mahfuz Alam also highlighted the growing participation of young voters and overseas Bangladeshis.

“The media has a crucial role in building trust among young voters. This time, overseas Bangladeshis will also exercise their voting rights. Media must reach them and explain the roles played by political parties,” he said.

Beyond coverage, the adviser urged media professionals to contribute to ensuring that elections remain peaceful and violence-free.

“The government will take all necessary measures to prevent citizens from falling victim to violence. The media also has a role to play in this regard,” he said.

Journalists at the session welcomed the focus on safety and urged the government to ensure protection for media personnel during elections.

They also called for the Election Commission to review rules for reporting at polling stations and highlighted the need to prevent any misuse of journalists’ identity cards.

The session saw participation from key officials including Mahbuba Farzana, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Additional Secretary Md Kausar Ahmad, heads of departments under the ministry, and editors, publishers, and journalists from across the country.
