Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has arrived in New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 3 pm local time on Monday by a commercial Emirates flight.

Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the United States, Ariful Islam, received the Chief Adviser at the airport.

Earlier, the Chief Adviser left Dhaka for New York on Sunday night (Bangladesh time) to join the UNGA session.

He is accompanied by six advisers of the interim government along with leaders from BNP, Jamaat and NCP.

Upon arrival in New York, the Chief Adviser is scheduled to meet the family members of Didarul Islam, the Bangladeshi-origin NYPD officer killed recently in a terrorist attack.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain, who is leading the advance team of the Chief Adviser’s visit, reached New York two days earlier.

The Chief Adviser will address the UN General Assembly on September 26 and the Migrants’ Summit on September 27.

On the sidelines, he will hold meetings with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and several other heads of state and government.

He is also scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. Heads of state and government from across the world are attending high-level meetings on the occasion.

The theme of this year’s UNGA session is: Better Together: Eighty Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.
