The district of Narsingdi has been jolted by another wave of violence, with two separate killings within 24 hours leaving residents in shock and security forces on high alert.
On Friday afternoon, a woman was shot and hacked to death in Alokbali union, just a day after a political activist was gunned down in the same area. Hours earlier, in a separate incident, a young housewife was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband in Raipura upazila.
Political Rivalry Turns Deadly
Police said the latest victim, Ferdousi Akhter, 35, was attacked inside the courtyard of her home in Birgao Satpara village, Alokbali, as worshippers gathered for Juma prayers.
According to witnesses, assailants stormed the house and opened fire before hacking her with sharp weapons. She died on the spot, while two others sustained injuries.
Ferdousi was the wife of Royes Ali, a known supporter of Shah Alam Chowdhury, convener of the Alokbali union unit of the BNP.
The killing is believed to be the fallout of an escalating feud between two rival BNP factions in the riverine Alokbali char area.
The previous morning, 60-year-old Idan Mia, aligned with expelled BNP secretary Kayyum Mia, was shot dead during clashes allegedly carried out by Shah Alam’s group. Ten others were wounded in that attack, sparking fresh tensions across the locality.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sujan Chandra Sarkar told that law enforcers were deployed in strength to prevent further bloodshed.
The situation is now under control, but we are closely monitoring the area, he said.
Domestic Dispute Ends in Bloodshed
In another grim development late Thursday night, a domestic quarrel turned fatal in Palashtali village, Raipura upazila. Police said Manik Mia, following an argument over household matters, allegedly plunged a knife into the chest of his wife, Shiuli Akhter, 30. She died instantly.
Officers from the Bashgari police outpost rushed to the scene after receiving reports from neighbours and recovered the body. Manik Mia was detained soon afterwards.
“The suspect is in custody, and we are taking the necessary legal steps,” said Raipura police officer-in-charge Adil Mahmud, confirming the incident.
A District on Edge
The twin tragedies have cast a pall over Narsingdi, a district already grappling with sporadic unrest in its rural belts. Residents of Alokbali described a climate of fear as long-standing political rivalries spiral into bloody reprisals.
Authorities have urged calm, but the recent killings highlight the fragile peace in parts of the district, where disputes — whether political or personal — too often end in violence.
