Bangladesh Under-23 footballer Mahamudul Hasan Kiron has been elected Sports Secretary of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) after securing the highest number of votes among all contestants.

The results were announced on Saturday (Sept 13), ending a tense 48-hour wait following the close of polling.

In a curious twist, Kiron won with an impressive 5,778 votes — yet could not cast his own ballot. At the time of the election, he was in Malaysia representing Bangladesh in the AFC Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers.

His nearest rival, Shafiuzzaman Shahin of the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel, received 1,221 votes, while Uzzal Hasan Robin, supported by the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, polled 543 votes.

Kiron, a student of the Bangla Department from the 2018–19 academic session (48th batch), resides at AFM Kamaluddin Hall.

He currently plays in the Bangladesh Premier League for Rahmatganj MFS and has previously represented Bashundhara Kings, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Arambagh Krira Sangha.

The JUCSU polls were held on September 11.
