Zaima Rahman, daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has been appointed as a legal officer at the office of Khalilur Rahman, president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Zaima will oversee legal matters at the office, according to UN officials. The office of the UNGA president has 40 personnel, including six Bangladeshis.
Bangladeshi diplomat Md Abdul Alim has been appointed deputy chief of the office, while Moazzem Hossain will serve as an adviser and administrative assistant.
Mafizul Islam has been appointed senior adviser on information, artificial intelligence and strategic foresight, while Zakir Ahmed will serve as senior adviser on sustainable development and climate change.
Md Rafiqul Alam Molla will work as senior adviser on countries with special needs.
Khalilur Rahman assumed the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly on September 8 after being elected to the position at the UN headquarters in New York.
During his presidency, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to deliver his first address to the UN General Assembly as Bangladesh’s prime minister on Thursday.
Zaima studied law at Queen Mary University of London and later completed Bar-at-Law in the United Kingdom. She also passed the first stage of the Bangladesh Bar Council’s enrolment examination in June 2026.
UN officials said the president of the General Assembly is not a direct employee of the United Nations and does not receive a regular salary from the organisation.
Expenses related to the president’s salary, allowances and accommodation are generally borne by the president’s home country or government, while some expenses may also be covered through the UN’s regular budget and trust funds.
