Professor Mafruhi Sattar, Election Commissioner of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) polls, stepped down from his post on Friday night, citing disregard for his opinions and allegations of irregularities in the election process.

Prof Mafruhi, who is also Acting Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences and a professor at the Department of Pharmacy, announced his resignation at a press conference in front of the university’s New Faculty of Arts building around 9:15 pm. He is currently serving as president of the nationalist teachers’ forum on the campus.

“I made this decision after much thought. I never wanted to put anyone in trouble, but several of my proposals were ignored. Without resolving my concerns, the vote counting was resumed. This was disrespectful to me, and that is why I have decided to resign,” he told reporters.

He further said he had identified some flaws in the election and submitted written complaints seeking redress, but his views were disregarded.

The JUCSU polls were held on Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm. Manual vote counting began that night, but even after 28 hours, the commission has yet to complete the process.
