Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday said the new sun of freedom that rose through victory in the Liberation War had been dimmed in recent years by autocracy and fascism.

“Through the July mass uprising, we have once again got the opportunity to establish a discrimination-free, corruption-free, independent and sovereign democratic state system,” he said in his address to the nation on Tuesday evening on the occasion of Victory Day.

Extending Victory Day greetings to the people of Bangladesh, Dr Yunus said the day is an unforgettable and glorious chapter in the country’s history.

He said on this day in 1971, after nine months of a bloody Liberation War, the nation achieved its long-cherished victory, gaining an independent country and the red-green flag through immense sacrifice and the blood of millions of martyrs.

In his speech, the Chief Adviser paid deep tribute to the brave freedom fighters and martyrs who laid down their lives in the Liberation War and in struggles for independence over generations.

Their sacrifices, he said, continue to inspire courage to stand against injustice and oppression and show the path to liberation in all crises and struggles.

Dr Yunus also said the interim government has undertaken a wide-ranging reform programme to build a strong foundation for a developed and well-governed Bangladesh.

With the collective participation of people from all walks of life, we are now moving towards the successful completion of that process,” he added.
