Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Shadik Kayem has called for the resignation of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, holding him responsible for what he described as the government’s failure to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.

In a message posted on social media on Saturday, Shadik said the sight of the body of 13-year-old missing child Opratim in Cumilla would leave any conscientious person speechless, questioning whether such incidents were causing any concern to the minister responsible for maintaining law and order.

He alleged that the home minister was instead busy handling responsibilities on behalf of the prime minister, interfering in the affairs of other ministries, or considering how his son and relatives could be appointed to major government projects or lucrative public positions despite lacking relevant experience.

Shadik further alleged that a series of killings and rape incidents had taken place since the BNP government assumed office, saying women, children and elderly people were all increasingly vulnerable.

Referring to the recovery of the bodies of an expatriate and his wife and daughter in Manikganj on Saturday, he said such incidents demonstrated the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the country.

“Undoubtedly, Salahuddin Ahmed is the most failed minister of this failed government,” Shadik said in his post.

“We did not fight in 2024 for such a Bangladesh. We fought for the safety and security of every person in this country,” he said.

“If the government cannot ensure that security, the home minister should resign in time, taking responsibility for his failure. This is the demand of the people,” Shadik said.
