The nomination board of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) today interviewed aspirants seeking the party's nomination for the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary by-election.

BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the development while briefing reporters after a meeting of the party's standing committee tonight.

He said the standing committee meeting was essentially a meeting of the party's nomination board, as the standing committee itself serves as the nomination board under the BNP constitution.

Rizvi said the interviews were conducted at a meeting chaired by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the BNP chairman's office in Gulshan.

A decision on the party's candidate will be announced later, he said.

The Thakurgaon-1 seat fell vacant after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected President and subsequently assumed office. The Election Commission has scheduled the by-election for October 29, with September 27 set as the deadline for submitting nomination papers.
