The interim government has said that BNP-nominated candidate for Chattogram-8 constituency Ershad Ullah was not the main target in Wednesday’s attack during his election campaign.

In a statement, the government strongly condemned the incident of violence during Ershad Ullah’s campaign event.

According to the Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s (CMP) initial investigation, Ershad Ullah was not the intended target of the attack; a stray bullet hit him during the chaos.

The government has ordered a full investigation into the incident and wished a speedy recovery for the injured Ershad Ullah, the statement said.

Expressing deep concern over the criminal act, the government reaffirmed its firm commitment to ensuring the safety and rights of all candidates and citizens participating in the democratic process.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed law enforcement agencies to identify, arrest, and bring the perpetrators to justice without delay.

There is no place for violence or intimidation in our political and social life. CMP has already launched operations to apprehend the attackers,” the statement added.

The interim government urged all political parties and their supporters to remain calm and exercise restraint, ensuring that the upcoming general election in February is held in an atmosphere of peace, dignity, and fairness.

It also assured that all necessary measures will be taken to guarantee a free, fair, credible, and festive election across the country.
