BNP’s nominated candidate for Chattogram-8 constituency, Ershad Ullah, sustained bullet injuries during an attack on his campaign in the city’s Hamzarbag area under Bayezid Police Station on Wednesday evening.

According to witnesses, a group of unidentified assailants suddenly opened fire during the campaign event, triggering panic among locals. Ershad Ullah was hit in the leg, while two others — including a man identified as Sarwar Babla — were also shot.

All three injured were taken to a private hospital in the capital, where doctors later declared Sarwar Babla dead. Police said Babla was a listed top criminal in their records.

Confirming the incident, CMP Commissioner Hasib Aziz said, “We have received preliminary reports suggesting an exchange of gunfire. A police operation is underway. This incident will not affect the upcoming national election.”

Doctors have said Ershad Ullah’s condition is now out of danger.

Ershad Ullah, who serves as the convener of Chattogram Metropolitan BNP, has been involved in the party’s politics for many years. Following the incident, a tense situation has been prevailing in the area.
