Today, Thursday, 3 September 2026, marks the 19th jail release day of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He was arrested on 7 March 2007 by the illegal 1/11 government as part of a conspiracy motivated by political vendetta.
After spending nearly 18 months in prison without trial, he was released on bail on 3 September 2008.
In the early hours of 7 March 2007, Tarique Rahman, then the BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General, was arrested from his residence in Dhaka Cantonment and taken into custody. It further stated that he was subjected to severe torture while in prison.
After securing bail in all false and politically motivated cases filed against him, he travelled to England in 2008 for advanced medical treatment.
After remaining abroad for many years, he returned to fascism-free Bangladesh on 25 December 2025.
Subsequently, in the parliamentary election held on 12 February 2026, the people gave the BNP the mandate to govern the country.
Following the formation of the government based on the people's verdict, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is currently serving as Prime Minister.
