A student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) was reportedly raped in Savar’s Birulia union while returning home, police said.
Although a case has been filed, police are yet to arrest anyone in connection with the incident that took place on Tuesday, according to the victim.
The victim filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Savar Model Police Station on Thursday night, accusing three individuals — Sohel Rozario, 37, Biplob Rozario, 40, and Mithu Biswas, 35. Among them, Sohel has been accused of rape, while the other two have been charged with assisting him.
According to the case statement, the victim, who tutors students in Savar, returned home on Tuesday evening after giving tuition. Upon arrival, she found the door locked and learned that her mother had left the key with a nearby tea stall owner.
While walking home after collecting the key, Sohel Rozario, a local resident, began harassing her. Shortly afterward, the two other accused joined him. Around 7 pm, they forcibly took her to an abandoned tin-shed house in the nearby Goalpra area, where Sohel allegedly raped her with the assistance of the others.
The victim alleged that after the incident, Sohel threatened to kill her if she disclosed what had happened.
Her family initially tried to keep the matter quiet due to social stigma and shame, but later filed a case with police with the help of some locals.
Locals staged a protest and brought out a procession in the area on Friday afternoon, demanding the immediate arrest of the rapists.
The accused have long been involved in drug trading in the area. If the police fail to arrest them soon, we will lay siege to Savar Model Police Station,” said the protesters.
Despite 24 hours passing since the case was filed, none of the accused have been arrested yet.
Md A. Wahab, the investigation officer and a sub-inspector (SI) at Savar Model Police Station, said the victim underwent a medical examination on Friday.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jewel Mia of Savar Model Police Station said an investigation is underway and efforts are on to arrest the accused. “They will be brought under the law soon,” he added.
Meanwhile, BUP students blocked roads at Mirpur-12 and Mirpur-10 in Dhaka on Saturday, protesting the incident and demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. They have given the authorities a 24-hour ultimatum and announced plans to continue their protest on Sunday if the accused are not arrested.
