The Finance Ministry has formed a five-member committee to assess the financial losses caused by Saturday’s devastating fire at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

According to a ministry press release issued on Saturday night, the committee will be headed by Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Patwary, Joint Secretary of the Internal Resources Division (IRD).

The committee includes Pankaj Barua, Deputy Secretary of the IRD, as member secretary, while Md Roich Uddin Khan and Tarek Hasan, both First Secretaries of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), and Muhammad Kamrul Hasan, Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, have been made members.

The notification did not specify a deadline for submitting the report but instructed the committee to determine the extent of damages “as soon as possible.”

The fire, which broke out around 2:15 pm on Saturday at the airport’s cargo village, caused massive destruction. While the exact financial losses are yet to be determined, business associations fear the damages could run into several hundred crore taka.
