National Citizens’ Party (NCP) Chief Organiser for the Northern Region Sarjis Alam has claimed that the recent spate of fire incidents across the country are not isolated events, but part of a “fascist conspiracy” to destabilise Bangladesh.
Shortly after the fire broke out at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday afternoon, Sarjis made the remark in a post on his verified Facebook profile.
I don’t see the fires in different parts of the country as isolated incidents. These are part of a conspiracy by the allies of autocracy to create instability. Instead of staging another so-called investigation drama, the real cause behind these incidents must be uncovered,” he wrote.
He further said that the interim government’s failure to identify and punish those aligned with autocratic forces is one of its “major weaknesses,” warning that Bangladesh may suffer long-term consequences if such impunity continues.
Earlier on Saturday, a massive fire broke out at the cargo section of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, which remained out of control even after four hours.
Just two days earlier, on Thursday afternoon, a factory fire in the Chittagong Export Processing Zone (EPZ) raged for 17 hours before being doused.
Before that, on October 14, a chemical warehouse and a garments factory in Rupnagar, Mirpur, were gutted in another fire that claimed 16 lives.
