The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday sentenced former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman and two other police officials to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising in the capital’s Chankharpul area.

The verdict was delivered by a three-member tribunal bench led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of the convicts’ properties.

The other two death-row convicts are former additional commissioner of police Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and former additional deputy commissioner (Ramna zone) Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam.

In the same verdict, the tribunal sentenced former assistant commissioner of Ramna zone Mohammad Imrul to six years’ imprisonment, former Shahbagh police station inspector Md Arshad Hossain to four years, and several former constables to three years each.

This is the second verdict delivered over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising. Earlier, on November 17, the same tribunal sentenced deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death in a separate case.
