The sit-in programme scheduled to be held at Shahbagh after Jumma prayers in Dhaka has been postponed following the death of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has said.
In a verified Facebook post on Friday afternoon, Nahid said that instead of the Shahbagh sit-in, a protest march will be brought out from Banglamotor at 4pm.
He urged party leaders and activists to exercise maximum caution during any programme after Jumma prayers, warning that anti-July forces are allegedly planning vandalism and sabotage similar to incidents that took place the previous day.
“We are against all forms of violence and sabotage,” Nahid said, calling on activists to remain vigilant so that no reckless group can exploit public anger to carry out vandalism, arson or any subversive activities.
“Considering the overall situation, the Shahbagh programme after Jumma prayers in Dhaka has been postponed,” he added.
Following the news of Osman Hadi’s death, protest marches were held across the country throughout the night. In Chattogram, houses belonging to two former ministers were reportedly set on fire, while in Rajshahi, the office of the now-banned Awami League was demolished.
Public anger has spread to different parts of the country. In the capital, the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo in Karwan Bazar were also attacked and vandalised, according to reports.
