The kidney functioning of Sharif Md Osman Hadi, convener of Inqilab Mancha, who was injured by gunfire, has returned; however, his overall condition remains extremely critical, according to the Medical Board.
In an official statement issued on Saturday afternoon (13 December), the Medical Board said Hadi was shifted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital, Dhaka, following the completion of surgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday (12 December). The transfer was made to ensure advanced post-operative treatment and close monitoring.
The statement said Hadi’s brain has suffered severe damage. As surgical intervention has already been completed, he is currently being managed conservatively. All necessary support is being provided in line with the brain protection protocol. A repeat CT scan of the brain may be conducted once his physical condition becomes relatively stable.
The board also noted the presence of lung injury. A chest drain tube remains in place as a small amount of blood continues to be discharged. To prevent lung infection and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), ventilator support will be continued with the highest level of caution.
According to the statement, Hadi’s kidney function has currently returned, and a pre-determined fluid balance plan is being carefully maintained to preserve it. Although there had previously been an imbalance between blood clotting and bleeding, this has now largely been brought under control. The situation is being monitored round the clock, and blood and blood products will continue to be administered as required.
The Medical Board said fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate are being observed due to brain stem injury. Ongoing support to regulate blood pressure will continue. In the event of a dangerously low heart rate, a specialised team remains fully prepared to install a temporary pacemaker immediately.
The board expressed sincere gratitude to the doctors and supportive staff of the One-Stop Crisis Centre, Radiology, ICU, Anaesthesia, Neurosurgery and other relevant departments of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for their outstanding and humane contribution to the patient’s treatment.
“At present, the patient’s overall condition is extremely critical,” the statement said, adding that a detailed medical summary has been shared with Hadi’s brother and close relatives. With their consent, the information may be shared with the public through the media. The medical team has requested prayers from the public for Sharif Md Osman Hadi’s recovery.
The statement also urged people not to gather at the hospital unnecessarily, noting that no visitors are currently permitted. It appealed to the public and media to refrain from spreading speculative or misleading information and to place their trust in the Medical Board. Everyone was asked to cooperate in protecting the patient’s privacy and dignity, while the medical team continues treatment with the highest level of professionalism, integrity and care.
