The BNP has expressed deep concern and strongly condemned the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, an independent contender for Dhaka-8 and spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, calling it part of a blueprint to sabotage the upcoming 13th national election.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party said Hadi’s shooting was “a component of a far-reaching, malicious plan,” adding that the incident clearly reflects attempts to disrupt the electoral atmosphere through acts of terrorism.

“A vested quarter is trying to fish in troubled waters by resorting to such terrorist activities. They are spreading fear and panic across society to gain undue advantage. Violent groups are moving with the intent to serve narrow political interests. A clique is pushing the country toward chaos to obstruct the democratic victory achieved through the student-public movement of July–August 2024,” the statement read.

Demanding punishment for those behind the attack, BNP said the public must remain vigilant against subversive activities aimed at halting the democratic process and derailing the upcoming national election.

“There is no alternative to taking stern action against these terrorist elements,” it added.

Calling for unity across political lines, BNP urged people from all walks of life to stand together to protect democracy, safeguard voting rights and ensure public security. Otherwise, it warned, lurking terrorists may exploit the situation and endanger the nation.

The party also demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers and exemplary punishment for them, while wishing a speedy recovery for the injured Hadi.
