Two university students were killed early Friday after a Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) garbage truck collided with their motorcycle in the capital’s Demra area while they were returning from a pre-wedding event.

The deceased were identified as Tahsin Topu, 25, and Iram Hridoy, 23 — both students of two private universities. Tahsin lived with his family in Sanarpar area while Iram resided in a mess on Chittagong Road.

Sub-Inspector Md Rubel Hawlader of Demra Police Station said the accident occurred on Mini Cox’s Bazar Road in Dharmapara when a DSCC waste truck collided head-on with the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The two youths were thrown off the bike and sustained critical injuries.

They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Tahsin dead around 4:45am. Iram died while undergoing treatment around 5:30am, said Inspector Md Faruk of the DMCH police camp. The bodies have been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Their friend Tawshif Hossain said they had attended a local elder brother’s gaye holud ceremony. After the event, some friends stayed back for tea while Tahsin and Iram left on the motorcycle. Moments later, they heard a loud crash and rushed to the spot to find the bike crushed under the garbage truck and their friends lying on the road.

Police said the truck has been seized but its driver managed to flee the scene.
