Former adviser to the interim government Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan has announced that he will contest the 13th national parliamentary election as an independent candidate from Dhaka-10.

In a 1-minute 12-second video posted on his verified Facebook page on Friday morning, Asif said he is entering the race from Dhaka-10, which covers parts of Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, Hajaribagh, New Market and Kamrangirchar.

He said the country now has an opportunity — for the first time in 17 years — to determine the future of Bangladesh. The dream of building a new Bangladesh is challenging but not impossible, he added, stressing the need to move beyond divisive politics and establish a welfare-oriented state that ensures new social, political and geopolitical frameworks for every citizen.

Acknowledging the tough road ahead, Asif said, “Inspired by the sacrifices of Motiur Rahman, Taraman Bibi, Noor Hossain, Felani, Abrar Fahad, Abu Saeed and Mugdho, I want to continue this struggle for reconstruction and transformation.”

“I do not have the backing of any major party, a large number of dedicated activists or the financial strength usually required in traditional politics,” he said, adding that public support remains his only strength. “Your cooperation and endorsement are my sole reliance, and our accountability will be only to you.”

Calling on citizens to vote “yes” in the upcoming referendum, Asif urged people to seize the historic opportunity created by the sacrifices of many lives and support efforts to reform the country.
