At least five people were killed and more than 200 injured as walls and railings collapsed during a 5.7-magnitude earthquake that jolted Dhaka and surrounding districts on Friday morning.

In Old Dhaka’s Bangshal area, three people were killed when a building railing collapsed. A 10-month-old child died in Narayanganj’s Rupganj after a wall collapse, while an elderly man was crushed under the wall of a mud house in Malita village under Palash upazila of Narsingdi.

According to a press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 208 injured people have received treatment in hospitals across several districts so far.

DGHS Hospital and Clinics Director Dr Moinul Ahsan said emergency instructions have been issued to all hospitals, and necessary support for treating the injured is being ensured.

The DGHS said the number of casualties is rising, with reports indicating a significant surge in patient arrivals at hospitals in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narsingdi and adjacent districts. The overall situation is being closely monitored.

At Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, three quake victims died, including second-year student Rafiul Islam. Ten others are undergoing treatment there.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital has admitted 18 injured patients, and physicians said the number may increase.

Gazipur’s Tajuddin Medical College Hospital is facing the highest patient pressure, treating 72 injured people so far — 49 admitted and 23 given first aid.

In Sripur Upazila Health Complex, 53 people received treatment; six were referred and 15 discharged after first aid.

Narsingdi District Hospital treated 45 injured patients, three of whom were in critical condition and later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

A 100-bed hospital in the area admitted 10 more injured patients.

Many people were hurt while rushing down stairs, jumping from buildings, or getting caught in the panic-driven crowd during the tremor.

In Rupganj’s Golakandail area, the 10-month-old child died when a wall collapsed during the quake, said Officer-in-Charge Tariqul Islam. The child’s mother and two others were also injured.

In Malita village of Palash upazila, elderly man Kazem Ali died after being trapped under a fallen wall of his mud house, OC Monir Hossain confirmed.

Officials fear the casualty numbers may rise further as more information comes in.
