Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the casualties and damage reported from several districts following Friday’s earthquake, which triggered building collapses and other accidents.
At least five people, including a child, have so far been confirmed dead, while close to a hundred others — including students at Dhaka University, factory workers in Gazipur, and residents near the quake’s epicentre in Narsingdi — have been reported injured.
In a condolence message, the Chief Adviser prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families. He also wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
Professor Yunus directed all relevant government agencies to intensify rescue and support operations in affected areas.
He said the government is closely monitoring the situation and has already initiated efforts to gather a full assessment of the damage.
The Chief Adviser expressed hope that the people would face this challenging situation with patience and courage.
