BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called for all political parties in the country to unite on the question of democracy.
He made the remarks at a discussion held at the Press Club to mark the death anniversary of Maulana Bhashani.
Fakhrul said the nation’s politics is currently mired in confusion. “Unfortunately, this period is marked by a complex crisis. An interim government has been formed with the support of all, and Dr Muhammad Yunus has tried to bring it into a political framework. However, there are questions about how far this has succeeded,” he said.
Despite widespread frustration, confusion, and uncertainty, there is a prospect of elections in February, he said, adding, “Yet, one group or party is trying to create uncertainty in the country’s politics,” Fakhrul noted.
In this context, he urged political parties to promptly support the electoral process and restore citizens’ voting rights in accordance with the public’s will. “The law and order situation in the country is not good; the situation is not normal. Without an elected government, these issues cannot be resolved. Therefore, an elected government is needed,” he said.
Fakhrul also referred to the upcoming verdict in the genocide case against the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (17 November).
He said, “There is widespread fear across the country, and a section is planning to exploit it to create disorder. Everyone must unite again and work for the nation. On the issue of democracy, all political parties must come together.”
He paid tribute to Maulana Bhashani, saying, “He had dreamed of independence and envisioned a welfare state, but he could not witness it. The BNP has a responsibility towards him. He had prayed for BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, and asked Mashiur Rahman Jadu Mia to work with Ziaur Rahman.”
