Any chaos that may arise on the day of the verdict in the war crimes case against Sheikh Hasina must be handled by the law enforcement agencies, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Friday.
He stressed that maintaining law and order is not the responsibility of any political party and that Bangladesh must move away from such a political culture.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the “Medical Value Travel Summit” at Hotel Peninsula in Chattogram, he said law enforcement agencies are solely responsible for ensuring security and order.
“There is no obligation for political parties to maintain law and order,” he added.
Regarding concerns about potential unrest over the verdict, Amir Khasru said, “The law enforcers will prevent any chaos. They are here to maintain law and order. Political parties have no role in that.”
He also said it is the court that will deliver the judgment, and he would not comment on the verdict itself.
“We have always demanded an impartial judiciary. We hope an independent judiciary has now been established, and that it will become more institutionalised in the coming days,” he noted.
“We are heading toward a political transition, toward elections—that is our main focus now,” he added.
The International Crimes Tribunal is set to deliver the verdict on Monday in the war crimes case filed against the ‘fugitive’ former prime minister in connection with alleged attempts to foil the July uprising. The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder, fixed the date on Thursday.
Ahead of the verdict, the banned Awami League on Thursday announced a “Dhaka Lockdown” programme, during which scattered incidents of explosions and arson attacks on vehicles were reported in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
