BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Friday said that no law or constitutional amendment can be enacted through a referendum, stressing that a national parliament must be formed for such processes.
He made the remarks at a pre-procession rally organised by the Women and Children Rights Forum in Shahbagh.
Salahuddin Ahmed said independence and sovereignty mean ensuring the rights of all citizens.
He said citizens must enjoy equal rights, adding, “We have only one identity—we are citizens of Bangladesh. There should be no religious or cultural divisions among us.”
He further said the Bangladesh envisioned through the July Movement must now be built.
“We want to establish a strong democratic state where there will be no discrimination,” Salahuddin added.
The BNP leader said the party is committed to implementing the July National Charter as it was signed. Any proposal imposed beyond this, he said, will be judged by the people.
