The BNP on Tuesday warned that the government will have to bear full responsibility if it takes any decision outside the framework of the July National Charter, saying that no signatory political party will be obliged to accept such a move.
The government alone will be accountable for any decision taken beyond the July National Charter. Signatory parties will have no obligation to abide by it,” BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said at a press conference at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
The briefing was arranged to disclose the outcomes of the party’s Standing Committee meeting held at the same venue on Monday night, with BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman in the chair.
Reading out a written statement, Mosharraf said that after nearly a year-long dialogue between the National Consensus Commission and political parties, the July National Charter was signed on October 17 on the basis of consensus, with some notes of dissent. “All parties involved are committed to implementing it in accordance with the Constitution and the law,” he added.
Referring to recent remarks by some advisers of the interim government, Mosharraf said such comments about making policy decisions beyond the July National Charter are “misleading” and tantamount to disregarding a collectively reached consensus.
He reiterated that if the government makes any decision outside the scope of the charter, the signatory parties will not be bound to comply with it. “In that case, the government must take full responsibility,” he warned.
The BNP’s Standing Committee also urged the government to act with caution on this matter.
BNP leaders Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Major (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed were present at the press conference.
