Aam Janatar Dal’ member secretary Tarek Rahman has ended his hunger strike following a request from BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed.

Tarek had been on hunger strike in front of the main gate of the Election Commission (EC) building in Agargaon since last Tuesday, demanding registration for his political party.

After nearly 133 hours without food, he was taken to Dhaka’s Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in an ambulance around 8:30pm on Sunday, in the presence of BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed.

Salahuddin told reporters that he had spoken to the EC about reconsidering the party’s registration appeal. “I believe justice will be done. I requested Tarek to end his hunger strike, and he accepted my request,” he said.

Earlier on November 4, the EC granted registration to two new political parties, leaving Tarek’s Aam Janatar Dal out of the race. Later that day, around 4pm, he began his hunger strike in front of the EC building in protest.
