Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has sharply criticized Jamaat-e-Islami, describing the party’s so-called proportional representation (PR) movement as a political deception.

In a post on his verified Facebook page on Sunday afternoon, Nahid said the movement was intended to divert attention from the core discussions on constitutional reform and state restructuring, thereby undermining the reform process of the Consensus Commission formed after the people’s movement.

Nahid explained that the main demand of the PR initiative was to create an upper house with representation for parties based on the people’s vote, envisaged as a constitutional mechanism to protect citizens’ power. However, he alleged that Jamaat and its allies exploited the issue for their own party interests, turning a genuine reform proposal into a tool for strategic political bargaining.

Jamaat has never participated in discussions on real reforms or the establishment of a democratic state — neither before nor after the July movement. Their support for ‘reforms’ was only part of a political strategy and a diversion,” Nahid said.

He added that the people of Bangladesh have recognized this deceit and are now aware of who are true reformists and who are opportunists.

In the future, ordinary citizens will not hand over the country to dishonest and self-serving politicians,” Nahid concluded.
