A delegation of teachers from MPO-listed non-government educational institutions met BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka.
Earlier in the morning, the Finance Division agreed to increase house rent allowance by 5 percent of the basic salary, with a minimum of Tk 2,000.
The decision was confirmed in an official order signed by Deputy Secretary Mitu Mariam. According to the order, the increment will be applicable to MPO-listed teachers and employees of non-government educational institutions under six specific conditions, effective from 1 November.
Following the issuance of the order, the teachers rejected the decision and announced their determination to continue their protest. They have been staging a sit-in and hunger strike at the Central Shaheed Minar for eight consecutive days.
The agitating teachers have demanded a 20 percent house rent allowance, an increase of the medical allowance to Tk 1,500, and a 75 percent rise in festival allowances.
They have warned that their movement will continue until a new government order is issued to fulfill these demands.
