Ten people, including the gunman, have been killed in a shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia, police confirmed on Saturday, marking the deadliest mass shooting in the country since the 1996 Port Arthur tragedy.
In that incident, a lone gunman opened fire at the historic site in Tasmania, killing 35 people and injuring scores more. The attack prompted sweeping reforms to Australia’s gun laws, including a nationwide gun buyback scheme and stricter ownership checks, after which mass shootings became exceedingly rare.
Since then, most of the few mass shootings recorded in Australia have been linked to domestic violence, rather than attacks in public spaces.
Authorities described the Bondi Beach shooting as a shocking and unprecedented act of violence for Australia, a nation long regarded for its strict gun control and relatively low levels of gun-related crime.
Investigations are ongoing as police seek to establish the motive behind the attack.
