US special envoy Steve Witkoff and former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are set to join Gaza peace plan talks between Israeli and Hamas negotiators in Egypt on Wednesday, according to officials familiar with the discussions.
Their arrival follows a second day of indirect talks on Tuesday that ended without tangible results, a senior Palestinian official told the BBC. The negotiations aim to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage release agreement amid ongoing tensions in the region.
Trump struck a positive tone as Israelis marked the second anniversary of the 7 October Hamas-led attacks, saying there was “a possibility that we could have peace in the Middle East.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refrained from commenting on the progress of the talks but described the current period as “fateful days of decision.”
In a post on X, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s objectives: “The return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel.”
A source told the BBC that Witkoff and Kushner were expected to depart the United States on Tuesday evening and arrive in Egypt on Wednesday.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, regarded as a key mediator, will also join the discussions, Reuters reported. His participation is aimed at “pushing forward the Gaza ceasefire plan and hostage release agreement,” an official said.
The head of Turkish intelligence is also expected to attend, underscoring the regional and international efforts to broker a lasting peace.
