Parts of the COP30 climate summit venue in the Brazilian city of Belem were evacuated on Thursday after reports of a fire, prompting delegates, observers and journalists to rush for the exits.

Brazil’s tourism minister told reporters at the scene that the blaze had been brought under control and no casualties were reported.

According to security staff, the alarm originated in the section of the venue housing national and organizational pavilions public-facing stalls where delegations showcase their initiatives.

Witnesses said attendees grabbed their belongings and hurried out as police cordoned off the affected zone. A loud siren continued to ring as officers prevented people from approaching the area.

Local TV footage showed flames and smoke billowing inside the conference center, located on the grounds of a former airport hosting the global climate gathering.
