Following a daring daytime robbery last week, the Louvre Museum has transferred some of its most valuable jewels to the Bank of France, French radio RTL reported on Friday.

The transfer, carried out under secret police escort, involved items from the museum’s Apollo gallery, home to the French crown jewels, RTL said, citing unnamed sources.

The Bank of France, located just 500 meters from the Louvre on the Right Bank of the River Seine, houses the country’s gold reserves in a massive vault 27 meters below ground.

The Louvre and the Bank of France have not immediately commented on the transfer.

On October 19, thieves stole eight precious pieces worth an estimated $102 million, breaking into the museum using a crane to smash an upstairs window during visiting hours. The culprits escaped on motorbikes, highlighting significant security lapses at the world’s most-visited museum.

The audacious heist sparked global attention and prompted a wave of soul-searching in France over what many regarded as a national embarrassment.
