Iran has executed Bahman Choobiasl, accused of being “one of the most important spies for Israel” following the country’s recent conflict with Israel and the United States.

According to Iran’s judiciary news outlet, Mizan, Choobiasl was hanged on Monday after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal. He was convicted on charges of “corruption on earth” and espionage for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency.

Mizan reported that Choobiasl had worked on “sensitive telecommunications projects” and had met with Mossad officials, providing access to governmental databases.

The main goal of Mossad in attracting the defendant’s cooperation was to obtain the database of governmental institutions and create a breach in Iranian data centres,” the agency said. It added that Mossad also sought information on the import routes of electronic equipment.

Choobiasl is the second person to be executed this month for alleged spying for Israel. Earlier, Babak Shahbazi was hanged under similar charges, though activists have questioned the legitimacy of his confession, claiming he was tortured after attempting to volunteer in Ukraine.

Iran has carried out a series of executions in the aftermath of the 12-day conflict in June with Israel and the United States. Officials maintain the measures are essential for national security, while human rights groups and activists have condemned the executions as politically motivated.
