A member of the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) was injured in a landmine explosion while on patrol along the Bangladesh–Myanmar border, authorities said. The incident occurred on Sunday around 12:30 pm in the Tumbru area of Naikhongchhari Upazila, Bandarban.
Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, Sector Commander of BGB’s Ramu sector, confirmed the incident. The injured, Lance Nayek Akhtar Hossain of the Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB), was serving at the Rezu Amtali Border Outpost. He has been admitted to Ramu Combined Military Hospital (CMH) following the explosion.
According to reports, the explosion resulted in the loss of one of his ankles, while his other leg sustained serious injuries.
Incidents of Bangladeshis being harmed by mines placed by the Arakan Army across the Myanmar border are not uncommon. On 6 April, a Bangladeshi youth lost a leg in a mine explosion at the Myanmar border in Teknaf Upazila, Cox’s Bazar. On 22 June, a mine blast in the Naikhongchhari border area severed a teenager’s leg.
Even wildlife has fallen victim to these mines. On 11 August, a wild elephant was severely injured in a landmine explosion in the same Naikhongchhari area, losing its right ankle.
Authorities have repeatedly urged caution in border areas due to the ongoing conflicts in Myanmar and the presence of mines along the frontier.
