A total of 53 rape incidents were reported across the country in September, with the majority of victims being children, according to a monthly report released by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.

The report, based on news published in daily newspapers, revealed that 224 women and girls were subjected to various forms of violence last month — including 92 children and 132 women. Among them, 32 girls and 21 women were raped.

One woman was killed after being raped, while nine girls and two others were victims of attempted rape.

The report further stated that 64 women and girls — including 13 girls and 51 women — were murdered in September, and two others survived murder attempts.

Mysterious deaths claimed the lives of 22 females, including four girls and 18 women, while five girls and 10 women took their own lives, many allegedly driven by abuse and harassment.

Nineteen females were victims of sexual violence during the month. These include nine cases of sexual assault, five cases of stalking, and one case of cyber violence against girls.

One woman died after an acid attack, while another sustained severe burn injuries. Two domestic workers also faced physical abuse at their employers’ homes.

The report added that five girls and two women were abducted in September, and an attempt was made to abduct another girl.

In addition, two girls and nine women suffered physical torture, while one girl was subjected to child marriage and two others faced forced marriage attempts.

Three incidents of dowry-related violence were recorded, including the murder of one woman over dowry demands.
