Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Friday over allegations of creating disorder and obstructing government officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
He was arrested from his residence at Dhamal Kot near the Dhaka Cantonment area in the evening, DB chief and Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed.
The DB chief said Akhtaruzzaman would be handed over to the Airport Police Station.
Earlier in the day, airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed a case against Akhtaruzzaman with the Airport Police Station over the incident.
According to the case statement, the incident took place on Thursday after passengers arriving from Madinah on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight faced delays in collecting their luggage amid a shortage of trolleys at baggage belt No. 8.
The situation reportedly became tense as passengers waited for their luggage. At one point, airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the spot to help bring the situation under control following a request from Dhaka-5 MP Mohammad Kamal Hossain.
The case statement alleges that Akhtaruzzaman approached the airport executive director aggressively, verbally abused him and threatened him during the incident.
It also alleges that people accompanying Akhtaruzzaman were recording videos inside a restricted Key Point Installation (KPI) area of the airport.
When security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin asked them to stop recording, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly verbally abused and assaulted him.
The complaint further alleges that Akhtaruzzaman threw bottles of Zamzam water from passengers' trolleys and behaved aggressively towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Police said they are examining CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence to establish what happened.
A Dhaka court has set November 10 for submission of the investigation report in the case.
The allegations against Akhtaruzzaman have not been established in court.
