A case has been filed against Jamaat-e-Islami leader and retired Major Mohammad Akhteruzzaman Ranjan for allegedly threatening the executive director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, and assaulting a security supervisor.

The case was filed at Airport Police Station early Friday by Shahriar Alam Sajib, a security officer of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).

Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Hasan Talukdar said the case was filed against Major Akhteruzzaman on allegations of obstructing government duties and issuing threats. “We are looking into the matter,” he said.

The case follows the circulation on social media of a video showing Akhteruzzaman speaking angrily at the airport on Thursday morning over a delay in supplying Zamzam water to Umrah pilgrims arriving on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Medina.

In the video, Akhteruzzaman is heard telling the airport executive director: “I will throw you out by the neck. I will throw you out by the neck. You do not work, you do nothing. You lobby to get posted here. Do you want to be beaten?”

According to the case statement, 34 Jamaat representatives and their family members arrived at Shahjalal International Airport from Medina on Biman's BG-338 flight at 8:55am on Thursday.

At the time, a large number of arriving passengers had created a long queue for collecting luggage trolleys. Several protocol assistants allegedly attempted to collect trolleys by bypassing the queue.

Some of those accompanying the group later became “agitated” over delays in receiving luggage and the failure to receive Zamzam water, and allegedly behaved improperly.

At around 10:45am, Dhaka-5 MP Mohammad Kamal Hossain called airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad to the scene.

The executive director arrived and was speaking with those concerned when retired Major Akhteruzzaman allegedly approached him in an aggressive manner and began using “extremely rude, obscene and abusive language”, according to the case statement.

The statement says the executive director “calmly” tried to explain the situation, including the pressure caused by the unusually high number of passengers and the arrangements for trolleys.

Akhteruzzaman allegedly became more agitated and said, “I will beat you up,” “Get out from here”, “I will throw you out by the neck”, “You do not know how to do the job; you got the posting through lobbying. Do you want to be beaten?”

Describing Akhteruzzaman's conduct as “extremely aggressive and violent”, the case statement says Dhaka-5 MP Kamal Hossain moved the executive director to a safe distance amid fears that the situation could deteriorate further.

Akhteruzzaman then allegedly became agitated again and threatened those present, saying: “You all should be tied up and beaten at the airport and put on social media so that Tareq Rahman can see it. Then you will straighten up. I will throw you out by the neck.”

The case statement also alleges that Akhteruzzaman made “extremely obscene and derogatory” remarks about Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat. “He is a bastard. He is doing nothing for the airport,” he allegedly said.

Several protocol assistants accompanying Akhteruzzaman allegedly recorded the incident and threatened to make the footage “go viral” on social media, according to the case.

The statement says security supervisor Mohammad Kamal Uddin, who was on duty at the time, asked those concerned not to record videos in the airport's key point installation (KPI) area amid concerns that the airport's security and discipline could deteriorate.

Akhteruzzaman allegedly approached Warrant Officer Kamal Uddin unexpectedly, verbally abused him and subsequently physically assaulted him.

The case statement says the alleged assault did not take place within the coverage of CCTV cameras, but that it could be established through the victim and eyewitnesses.

Later, when a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines arrived at the scene, Akhteruzzaman allegedly behaved abusively and aggressively towards him as well. He also allegedly threw bottles of Zamzam water belonging to ordinary passengers off a trolley.

Akhteruzzaman, a two-time former MP from Kishoreganj-2, joined Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the 13th parliamentary election.

He had previously won the Kotiyadi constituency as a BNP candidate in 1991 and June 1996.

His elder brother Anisuzzaman Khokon contested the seat as an independent candidate in the latest election. Khokon had previously served as an MP for Mymensingh-19 as a BNP candidate in 1979.

Meanwhile, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has temporarily suspended two officials over the delay in supplying Zamzam water to the Umrah pilgrims.

The two officials are baggage in-charge Monirul Islam Pradhan and flight supervisor Saddam Hossain. They have been asked to provide explanations over allegations of negligence in the discharge of their duties.
