Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday said law enforcement agencies must not detain people simply for expressing their opinions, stressing that citizens should be allowed to speak freely about their problems.

“People should be able to speak if they face any problem. Saying something and then being picked up by police: no, this cannot continue. People do not want this,” Tarique said while addressing a meeting with party leaders and activists at Sylhet Shilpakala Academy.

Tarique said legal action should only be taken if a crime is committed. “If anyone commits an offence, action will be taken in accordance with the law, that is a different matter.”

Referring to the gathering, the BNP chief said not all attendees were party supporters, but many joined because they believe the party remains “on the right track.”

“To retain this support, we must work hard and be willing to make sacrifices,” he told party leaders and activists.

Tarique also cautioned party members against developing a sense of entitlement due to being in power. “Do not think you are part of the ruling party. The moment you do, it will lead to downfall.”

Looking ahead to upcoming local government elections, he said the party must field candidates in all areas and strengthen its organisational base in advance.

The prime minister also urged leaders and activists to maintain discipline and ensure that their behaviour does not alienate the public.
