Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan has tendered his resignation from the post of Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Dhaka.
On Sunday, he formally handed over his resignation letter to Education Minister Ehsanul Haque Milon, said his protocol officer Mohammad Firoz.
“The Vice-Chancellor submitted his resignation letter to the minister on Sunday morning. However, the ministry has not yet issued any official notification. Further procedures will be completed once the resignation is accepted,” Firoz said.
Prof Khan has also applied to the President, in his capacity as Chancellor, seeking to return to his substantive post as a Grade-1 Professor in the Department of Development Studies at the university.
According to sources at the Ministry of Education, the Vice-Chancellor cited personal and administrative reasons for stepping down. Officials concerned said the next steps would be taken in accordance with established rules and procedures.
Earlier, ahead of the national election, Prof Khan told a press conference that the emergency situation at the university had eased and that an overall upward trend was visible in its activities. “I believe we have reached a good stage in the course of discharging our দায়িত্ব, and I now wish to step aside,” he said at the time.
He added that there should be no leadership vacuum and that continuity must not be disrupted. “The university needs a smooth transition. If the government and stakeholders feel that some time is necessary to ensure continuity and avoid any sudden vacuum, I am willing to consider that,” he said.
At the same briefing, he stated that he wished to step down so that the political government could organise its administration in its own way. “If my cooperation is required at any time, I am ready. I would request the government to relieve me from deputation at the earliest so that I may return to my primary responsibility of teaching in my department,” he added.
